The Winter White Siberian Hamsters

Siberian dwarf hamsters originated from the southwestern part of Siberia. They are not commonly seen among dwarf hamsters being sold. They are unique with the ability to transform color from dark grey to all white during winter, thus the other name Winter White Russian (Siberia being a part of Russia once before) applies well. This trait was developed in the wild during which they adapt the snow’s color to hide from predators. They can have this accomplished after sensing light from the sun which may make it hard though when caged.

They are not suitable for beginners but are recommended for expert handlers. It is best to buy a pair instead of one with aquariums and fake cages as housing option rather than the more common spaced or barred cages. The cage must have plenty of interval and hiding places. You can use pine shavings or recycled magazines or newspapers for beddings. Cedar is not recommended because it is toxic for most animals.

Up your sleeve from beddings, which must be sufficient by the way to build a nest; a food and water/milk container is a necessity as well. For playing purposes, a wheel, a hamster ball, and chew toys for his teeth can be added. Like any other hamster, these kinds are curious too and incorporating ladders, leveling, tunnels, and tubes will enhance playing experience for them. Cleaning of the cage must be done at smallest amount once a week at which time, bedding must be replaced. Since Siberian dwarf hamsters are for expert handlers, and teaching tricks requires being a seasoned handler; these types of dwarf hamster are simplest to teach.

A hamster’s diet on the wild consists of nuts, seeds, grains, and vegetable. Since domestication which started in the 1930′s, pellets with complete nutrient elements have become better alternatives.

It is not recommended to bathe a hamster as he may get sick. Personal grooming is accomplished by the hamster himself the way cats do when they lick themselves all over. On average, their life span may last up to three years and mating can start at three months.
